From its inception, the Association provided outings which gave the poor respite from crowded and demoralizing inner-city life. 'Summer work' was considered to be one of the most important of DCA's undertakings and prompted Canon Moore to establish a special fund in 1917 for the purpose of building a camp on the west shore of Lake Simcoe which was later named 'Moorelands'.
As Moorelands approaches its 100th Anniversary, we call on you again to help us with your stories and memories, and any documents, leaflets, flyers, newsletters etc. that might have ended up in your possession.
Our computer records are of some help, but none of them date before the late 1980s. That is why we recently found ourselves surprised by a very generous bequest left to Moorelands by the late Esther Gaskon. Mrs. Gaskon, a widow of the late Henry, has not had contact with Moorelands - since 1987. We know from written records that she contributed in the early 1980s, but beyond that the trail goes cold… We hope some of you might have known the Gaskon family and could help us fill in the blanks. We would love to know more about Mrs. Gaskon than her incredible, posthumous generosity.
If you feel that you can help us with this and other Moorelands mysteries please let us know either in writing, to 250 Merton Street, Suite 501, Toronto, Ontario M4S 1B1 or via e-mail to dschroeder@moorelands.ca or simply call us at 416-466-9987 and ask for Dagmar or Robert.
